In 2014 Bogdan decided to spend more time in nature, and with the help of a experienced beekeeper he bought an apiary, began to attend beekeeping lessons and started his beekeeping journey. At that time he didn't know how important bees are for us, but he soon found out. As far as important species go, they are top of the list. They are critical pollinators: they pollinate 70 of the around 100 crop species that feed 90% of the world. Honey bees alone are responsible for an estimated $30 billion a year in crops, but it could be more.
The first year was really tough. He found out that he had to know everything about each bee colony, which was rather difficult. One analogy he found rather fitting for his situation was that of having to take care of a family, with 2 or 3 kids. You need to know what they are doing all the time, every day, day after day - if they are hungry or ill. Imagine that you have 50 or 100 children. How could you handle it? Well, he discovered that beekeepers usually choose the traditional way of organizing and keeping track: pen and paper. They just write down observations, treatments, inspections, tasks and future actions to be done - basically everything.
There are almost 5 millions of beekeepers all around the world. And they take care of a lot of beehives. In the last decade, beekeepers lost many of their colonies because of diseases, pests, weather changes, and pesticides. Modern beekeeping means that you need to take actions faster based on your historical data and current conditions.
In first year, Bogdan also used paper and pen to write down the information about each bee colony. But during his second year as a beekeeper, h decided to build an application that will allow him to record all data to his smartphone, even when he is working in the apiary. Today Apiary Book is the most apreciated and downloaded application for beekeepers around the world.
